Inside Leak Investigation – Trainer Guide

Program Overview

In this virtual reality scenario, users will have access to a simulated workspace focused on completing the required tasks of inspecting a customer reported gas leak in their basement. Using available tools and resources, the user must determine the source of the leak and take the appropriate steps to resolve the issue.

Core Learning Objectives

Tools

  • Laser Pointer — To interact with menus and objects in this experience, users must aim their laser pointer at the item they wish to interact with and pull the trigger on their controller to select it.
  • Sense-it Tool — To take a reading, users should aim the tool and pull the trigger on their controller.

  • Soap Bubbles — Once they find an area with an abnormal reading, users should pull out the Soap Spray from the toolbox to test for a leak. If bubbles appear, there is a leak. If there are no bubbles, the leak is coming from somewhere else.

  • Crayon Tool — If users discover a leak, they should use the Crayon Tool to mark the leak’s location with an "X" by pulling the trigger on their controller. 

  • Voltage Pen — To inspect a meter for electric current, users must place the pen tip near the meter to detect if it is electrified. If present, the tip will light up red and beep.

How to Get 100%

  1. Open, read and close the work order.

    1. Use the laser pointer to close the work order window.

  2. Before doing anything else, perform a free air reading to check for a carbon monoxide gas leak. To check the air, use the CGI tool from the toolbox (located in the wrist menu).

    1. If the reading is too high (22% LEL or >200 PPM CO), evacuate without looking for the leak. Open Wrist Menu > Communication and select Evacuate and Notify Emergency Services. This should be completed within 2 minutes of the start of the scenario.

    2. If the reading is low (10% LEL or <50 PPM CO), go around the room taking readings to see if it gets stronger in any direction.

    3. If the reading is zero, check where the work order says the leak may be.

      1. The leak can come from boilers, washers, dryers, water heaters, furnaces, wall cracks, floor drains, uncapped pipes, or the gas piping from the meter throughout the basement to each appliance.

      2. Note: Common points for leaks in gas piping are the knees, and at threaded joints and unions.

  3. When a hazard is found, select it with the laser pointer and ask the customer to remove it, then mark the item as a hazard. 

  4. List of possible hazards:

    1. Gasoline or Kerosene Cans

    2. Oil Cans / Bottles

    3. Dead Animals

    4. Open Paint Cans

    5. Painting or Staining — A workbench with an item being painted or stained

    6. Lawnmower

    7. Piles of Old Clothes

    8. Piles of Rags

    9. Boxes

  5. If an appliance or area has an abnormal reading, use the Soap Spray from the toolbox to test for a leak.

    1. If bubbles appear — there is a leak.

    2. If there are no bubbles — the leak is coming from somewhere else.

  6. If a leak is discovered with the soap spray, use the Crayon Tool from the toolbox to mark the leak’s location.

    1. If the soap spray does not reveal a leak, continue searching.

  7. Next, use the laser pointer to select the appliance’s gas valve and shut off the gas. 

    1. If a leak is found outside of an appliance, such as the ceiling piping, shut off the gas meter in order to shut off the gas.

    2. If a leak is found in foundation cracks, floor drains, or in free air — gas flow can’t be turned off so the user should just report it.

  8. Once finished, open the Communication Menu and select the most accurate diagnosis. Communication Options:

    1. Evacuate Immediately, Hazardous Condition Present — Select if a high LEL or PPM reading was found

    2. No Leak Found — Select if there was no gas or CO leak in the experience

    3. Leak found, Company Action Taken — Select if there was an uncapped pipe

    4. Leak found, Customer Action Required — Select in any case where a leak is found and no outside investigation is required

    5. CO Leak found, Appliances Disconnected — Select if a CO leak was found

    6. Leak Investigation Required Outside — Select if the gas leak was in floor drains or wall cracks

  9. Once an option in the Communication Menu is selected, the user will be transported to the Review Room.

Helpful Hints

  • In some cases, the leak could just be an AOC.

  • Be sure to double check, as multiple leaks can occur.

  • If you smell gas, you will hear a “sniff” sound.
