First Responder Operations: Train Derailment – User Guide

Program Overview

Employ your knowledge of hazardous materials and keen observation to identify hazards, analyze vulnerabilities and provide the appropriate first response measures at a train derailment scene where hazardous materials are present.

Desktop

  • Mouse Left & Right Click – Activate Menu Option

Functionality

General Indicators

Green Buttons — press buttons with your virtual hands to activate

 

Exiting a Scenario — open your Wrist Menu and select Completion Menu > Leave

 

Tools and Equipment

  • Laser Pointer — to interact with menus in the experience, use your laser pointer

  • PPE — PPE can be donned by grabbing the equipment and bringing it to your body

Entering the Module

Login and Authentication

To use this experience, you must log in using a PIXO account created by the organization’s administrator, or by a PIXO VR Representative. The login must be performed from a headset that is connected to the internet for authentication to work successfully.

 

Tip: Select the Remember me flag to save your login credentials for your next session.

 

  1. Enter your PIXO credentials in the corresponding fields, then select Sign In.

  2. Once logged in, you will proceed to the lobby.

Lobby

  1. Choose between Single Player and Multiplayer (Online Session) modes by pressing the corresponding green button.

  2. Next, build your scenario by selecting from the following scenario features:

    • Spill / No Spill

    • Day / Night

    • Fire / No Fire

    • Hazardous Materials — Crude Oil / Chlorine / Liquid Propane Gas / Sulfuric Acid

  3. Press the Select Scenario button to lock in the scenario. Then press the Enter Scenario button to start the scenario and select the approach distance.

    • Note: If you do not press the Select Scenario button, the Enter Scenario button will be grayed out and you will not be able to press it.

Lobby Button Functionality

  • Reset Scenario — resets all options on the scenario screen to default

  • Select Scenario — saves the currently selected scenario options

  • Randomize — selects random options on the scenario screen

  • Enter Scenario — starts the scenario with the selected options

  • Back to Hub — exit multiplayer lobby and return to single player session selection

Experience Walkthrough

To complete each scenario, follow the sequence below:

  1. Select Approach Distance (to answer questions, select confirm after making a selection)

  1. Scenario Launches

  2. Don PPE prior to leaving the Safe Zone

    1. PPE is located on the side of the fire engine. Don PPE by grabbing the equipment and bringing it to your body. 

    2. Safe Zone (26’ around the Fire Engine) — leaving this area without PPE will result in failing the scenario.

  1. Identify Hazardous Material

    1. Locate the Train Car ID

    2. Open your wrist menu and select Ask Rail App

    3. Select the Train Car ID and the Car Information will show the ERG ID#

    4. Open your wrist menu again and select ERG App

    5. Find the Material using the ERG ID#, then select Confirm

  1. Select the Evacuation Zone

  2. If fires and spills are present, eliminate them within 240 seconds (4 minutes)

    1. Fire Present — Deploy hose and spray the fire for ~10 seconds

    2. Spill Present — Eliminate the Spill (steps vary per scenario)

  1. End the Scenario

    1. Open your wrist menu and select Completion Menu

    2. Select Scene is Secured

If fires and spills are not eliminated in time, you will be told to evacuate and will have 45 seconds to do so. To evacuate, open your wrist menu and select Completion Menu.

 

Review Performance

After completing the experience, you are transported to a review area and presented with an overall Passed or Failed score from the performance.

    • ERG Usage

    • Ask Rail Usage

    • Speed of Taken Actions

  • Operations

    • Evacuation Zone Determination

    • Decontamination Tent Placement (if applicable)

    • Fire Elimination

    • Spill Elimination

  • Technician

    • Protective Uniform

    • Kits/Tool Usage

    • Approach Zone Determination
