Set up Guardian for Meta Quest 1/2

Guardian is a built-in safety feature that lets you set up boundaries in VR that appear when you get too close to the edge of your play area. If you're setting up Guardian for the first time, follow the instructions you see in your headset.

What is needed:

  • META Quest 1 or 2

Guardian Modes

When setting up Guardian, you can choose from these modes:

  • Stationary: For using your headset while sitting or standing in place. Stationary Mode creates a default Guardian area of 3 feet by 3 feet (1 meter by 1 meter) centered on yourself.
  • Roomscale: For using your headset while moving around inside your play area. Roomscale allows you to draw your Guardian boundaries in your physical space using your Touch controller. We recommend a safe and unobstructed space measuring at least 6.5 feet by 6.5 feet (2 meters by 2 meters)

Adjusting Guardian

To switch Guardian modes or redraw your Guardian boundaries:

  1. Press  on your right Touch or Touch Pro controller to pull up your universal menu.
  2. Hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu. When Quick Settings appears, select it to open the Quick Settings panel.
  3. Select  Guardian.
  4. Select Stationary or Roomscale, then follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Guardian.

Managing Guardian Settings

To manage additional Guardian settings:

  1. Press  on your right Touch or Touch Pro controller to pull up your universal menu.
  2. Hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu. When Quick Settings appears, select it to open the Quick Settings panel.
  3. Select  Settings in the top right corner.
  4. Select  Guardian from the left menu.

The settings you can manage here include:

  • Adjust guardian: This puts you back into the guardian setup like you did when you first set up your headset.
  • Set floor level: Allows you to adjust the floor level of your Guardian Boundary.
  • Boundary color: Changes the color of your Guardian Boundary.
  • Double Tap for Passthrough: Enables the ability to double tap the side of your headset to switch to and from passthrough mode.
  • Clear Guardian History: Clears Guardian history for all accounts on the headset. This means if you have more than one person’s account on your Meta Quest headset, Guardian maps and tracking data will be removed from all accounts.
  • Glanceable Boundary: When enabled, you can look down at an angle while in-VR to quickly see where you are in your playspace.
  • Boundary Sensitivity: Determines how granularly you want to adjust your guardian boundary alerts. There are two options:
    • Simple: You’ll adjust the sensitivity of all of your boundaries collectively with a single slider. Lower sensitivity generally means you won’t be alerted until you get closer to your boundaries.
    • Advanced: You’ll adjust the sensitivity of your boundaries at a more granular level using the following settings:
      • Headset distance sensitivity: Lowering your distance sensitivity means that you won't be alerted until you're closer to the edge of the guardian boundary.
      • Controller distance sensitivity: Lowering your distance sensitivity means that you won't be alerted until you're closer to the edge of the guardian boundary.
      • Headset speed sensitivity: Lowering your speed sensitivity means you'll be alerted less when making fast movements near a boundary edge.
      • Controller speed sensitivity: Lowering your speed sensitivity means you'll be alerted less when making fast movements near a boundary edge.

Guardian Space Sense

Space Sense is a safety feature that allows you to see outlines of people, pets, and other objects that cross over the boundaries of your Roomscale Guardian while you’re in VR. Space Sense can show outlines of objects up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) away, provided that they have entered into your playspace.

To turn Space Sense on or off:

  1. Press  on your right Touch or Touch Pro controller to pull up your universal menu.
  2. Hover over the clock on the left side of the universal menu. When Quick Settings appears, select it to open the Quick Settings panel.
  3. Select  Settings in the top right corner.
  4. Select Guardian, then select Roomscale.
  5. Scroll down and select Space Sense, then select the toggle next to Space Sense to turn this feature on or off.
